Rewards are usually applied as Heartland coupons. Understanding how Heartland applies coupons is important to understanding rewards.
A Heartland coupon will not be applied to items that have been manually marked down at the register.
A Heartland coupon WILL be applied to items that are marked down via Promotions or because they have been marked down using the Current Price field.
If you have items that are discounted at the register and a customer wants to use a reward, the recommended workflow is:
Add items that will be manually marked down and change their price.
Add regular items.
Apply coupon.
Complete transaction as normal.
Redeem a reward with manually adjusted items

Change clearance items prices and give an adjustment reason. (Adjustment reasons are account specific, in the example, we used "Correction".)
Add regular-priced items.

Complete the transaction as normal.
